What is Active Voice?

When the sentence is written in the active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action.

What is Passive Voice?

When the sentence is written in the passive voice, the subject of the sentence is acted upon.

*Sentences written in Passive Voice contain a form of the verb “to be”

For Powerful Writing, Use Active Voice!

Create dynamic and powerful writing by using the Active Voice – i.e., by using active rather than passive verbs.

Examples:

Passive Voice: The results were presented to the client by the director.

Active Voice: The director presented the results to the client.

Passive Voice: It was recommended that the wording be changed.

Active Voice: The editor recommended that the wording be changed.

The Passive Voice is appropriate and useful when:

  • When the “Doer” is unknown:

The stadium was built in 1974.

  • When the “Doer” is unimportant:

Your books were shipped yesterday.

  • When the “Doer” is better left unsaid:

Your invoice was written for the wrong amount.
